I was fortunate enough to be invited by Professor Mark Lomanno to meet with his students in the class called Musical Communities of Boston. It was a class about the diverse musical traditions of Boston and Professor Lomanno wanted me to talk about the importance of music as it relates to the Chinese and Chinese American communities in the Boston area, both historically and today. This is something that I had never done or thought about before. I had no idea what could be offered from me. At first I tried to prepare it like what I was preparing for a regular Chinese music introduction lecture. As I though over and over again I started to realize that it was more than just an introduction of Chinese music instead it was about our lives as immigrants in Boston and how we blend in this society with our culture. So I started to change the direction from mainly to talk about Chinese music to the GBCCA Chinese Music Ensemble and its history. The ensemble has a long history that it was founded in 1984 and still one of the most active Chinese ensembles in the New England.
